Summary

The goal of this course is to introduce students to qualitative research and its applications in related fields, inspiring them to explore human experiences and narratives. The course content covers fundamental concepts of qualitative research, research design of various qualitative methodologies, data collection and analysis, and discussions on qualitative research ethics. Additionally, it provides guidance on designing and planning a qualitative research project.

Course Objectives

  1. Students will understand the philosophy and methodologies of qualitative research.
  2. Students will learn qualitative research methods and their applications in various related fields.
  3. Students will be motivated to explore human experiences.
  4. Students will understand qualitative interview techniques and research ethics.
  5. Students will attempt to plan a qualitative research project.

Instructor

Assistant Professor Ching, Yung-Chieh

Instructor's Introduction

Dr. Ching, Yung-Chieh is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing at Asia University’s College of Nursing, specializing in psychiatric nursing and qualitative research methods. She previously worked as a public nurse in the neuropsychiatric ward of the National Taiwan University Hospital. After accumulating extensive clinical experience, she pursued her passion for academia and research by studying abroad in the United Kingdom.

She obtained a Master’s degree in Nursing from Nottingham University and a Ph.D. from Sheffield Hallam University, focusing on mixed research methods integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches. Her doctoral research centered on qualitative research designs exploring the deep meanings of human experiences.

Upon returning to Taiwan, Dr. Ching served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing at Taipei Medical University, where she taught psychiatric nursing and also held the position of Teaching and Research Head Nurse at Taipei Medical University Hospital’s Nursing Department. She integrated clinical, teaching, and administrative experiences to cultivate nursing professionals with both technical expertise and humanistic care.

Later, she returned to her hometown, Taichung, and joined Asia University’s College of Nursing in the 109th academic year, continuing her dedication to nursing education and research.

Dr. Ching is passionate about promoting and applying qualitative research methods. She has guided over 15 graduate students in conducting qualitative research projects, with 6 successfully earning their Master’s degrees. She is also the instructor for the "Qualitative Research (Online Course)" in Asia University’s Master’s program in Nursing, which has been accredited by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education for digital courses. This recognition demonstrates her excellence in teaching and research.

Committed to advancing qualitative research, Dr. Ching leads students in exploring human experiences and continuously enhances the depth and breadth of nursing research. Her academic journey and professional contributions exemplify interdisciplinary learning and practice, making significant impacts in both clinical and educational fields while expanding the horizons of nursing academia.

Unit 7: Application of the six stages of qualitative interviews and research ethics
Unit 8: Ethical issues in qualitative research
Unit 9: Application of qualitative research in various professional fields
Unit 10: Practice of qualitative research


Grading Criteria

  • Practice tests: 40% of total grade
  • Final project: 30% of total grade
  • Class discussions (topic discussions): 10% of total grade
  • Final exam: 20% of total grade

Passing Criteria

  • Passing grade: 60 points (Max grade: 100 points)

Prerequisites

  • Introduction to research in social sciences or related fields
